This handmade baby quilt will be the hit of the baby-shower!
Have you ever wanted to make a special handmade baby quilt? Sooner or later, most families have the joy of expecting a newborn into their midst. Oh, what a fuss we make over the little ones even before their arrival. As a handmade quilt artist, I take great pleasure in making original designs to honor each individual baby, and offer a handmade baby quilt as my personal blessing of hope and love.
I designed the Angel Wing Quilt Series to serve as a common vehicle for those blessings I intended. The quilts all look different, but have a common design. Thus, each quilt made can build its blessing meme upon the previously made quilts and still remain fresh, diverse and individualized for the recipient.
In the center of the quilt is a set of wings - made of lots and lots of different fabrics that complete the color scheme chosen in the quilt's theme fabric.
The borders are the perfect places to build the color scheme of the quilt. I usually start with a great novelty print, since there are so many delicious ones to choose from. This is the one time I often let myself actually purchase new fabric (Though, not always. Thrift stores are a great source for re-purposed fabrics. Especially if you are willing to do a little deconstruction.)
This quilt was the first of many more Angel Wing quilts to come. The quilt was made as an experiment, and for this one, I used a technique I would change to make execution easier. It took way too many hours to make it practical, but I learned so much in the process. The novelty fabric in the border inspired the color theme and was reclaimed curtains! I loved the cosmic theme and the color palette would be suitable for both boys and girls.
Use Great Novelty Fabric For Inspiraton
A familiar nursery rhyme, The Cow Jumped Over the Moon, provides the inspiration for this great littly baby quilt.
I loved the colors in this wonderful novelty print, and from there it was easy to choose the colors for this fun quilt.
The metallic fabrics really make this quilt pop, and once the quilt was finished, I discovered I had enough of this great novelty print left over to make another handmade beauty for another lucky baby!
Bodo's Bagels First Angel Wing Quilt
I work in a bagel shop. Not just ANY bagel shop .... but THE bagel shop in my local community - Bodo's Bagels in Charlottesville, Virginia.
When one of the owners of Bodo's was expecting a new baby shortly after I had been hired, I decided a handmade baby quilt was a great way to offer my blessings. Not sure whether to make a pink or a blue quilt, I opted to use the left-over novelty fabric seen in the previous quilt.
Even though the color scheme is similar, the quilt is very different and still offers a unique blessing to the new addition to the Smith family.
Another Handmade Quilt For A Bodo's Baby!
Soon, another one of the owner's at Bodo's had a baby on the way, and another handmade baby quilt seemed to be in order.
This time, I was told that the Kokola's were expecting a boy. I had some novelty train fabric in my stash of reclaimed fabric, and some complimentary novelty prints with an aphabet and music motif gave me the building blocks for one of my favorite crib quilts.
Angel Wing Memorial Quilt
One of my favorite things to do when I first started offering my handmade goods for sale was to set up a tent at the local community market. One glorious day soon after I had started attending the market, a lovely woman noticed my Angel Wing quilts hanging from the support-beams of my tent. We spent a while in conversation and before she left the market for the day she returned to commission a memorial Angel Wing quilt to honor her mother.
The next week she returned with a list of some of Maggie's favorites and a small bag of scraps taken from her clothing. Included in the information was Maggie's favorite Irish blessing, favored flowers (pansies)and colors and the insight that Maggie had collected light houses, too.
The diverse elements proved challenging, at first, but eventually it all came together. Maggie's Quilt reads:
May the road rise up to meet you. May the wind be always at your back. My the sun shine warm upon your face, and the rains fall soft upon your fields. And until we meet again, may God hold you in the hollow of His hand.

You just never know where a blessing might end up! I heard through one of my daughter's, that Renny Martyn, of the Big Brother television show, was seeking art for a charity auction she was organizing. I decided ... why not? The quilt was a big hit, and Renny was kind enough to send me a picture of the new owner receiving her handmade angel wing quilt.
