Dream Big by Terri Stevenson

This is the very first WORD quilt I ever did! I recall specifically that I was just in the mood to play with the colors ... and as the colors moved from light to dark and back again ... I thought ... what a perfect canvas to explore finding ways to connect polar opposites.

I saw the background, which demonstrates it own colorful play of values, as the field. The play of the fabric was quite beautiful, and pleasing, but appeared empty, as if it were an elaborate victorian frame that held no image.

I clearly remember feeling quite optimistic in that moment, and on a whim I pulled the words DREAM BIG from somewhere and quickly sketched simple bubble letters on paper in a size I thought might work on the field.

The next step was to create another watercolor background Using only the dark fabrics. From this I cut out each letter, one at a time, and carefully placed it on the original field background.

Once I had the letters placed where I thought they should go, I began the process of the conversation! This is the fine-tuning ... the stepping back and looking at it from another perspective part. This is the place where you can discover the things that have become invisible to your eyes, too.

The process is rewarding, and I always have a sense of the beauty that is possible from that focus.
